Now that
the New Year is upon us many people make resolutions
of what they want to do this coming year. SO, often
we stick to our goals for a month or so and then we
let them go.
In my
coaching practice, I encourage people to think about
not what they want to do, but rather, who do you
want to be this year?
I heard a
recent study that most women pick losing weight as
their resolution but the top goal for men is to be a
better person. The men have the right idea. It seems
so overwhelming to figure out what you want to do.
For many people, the question paralyzes them. If I
ask a client what they want to do, the most common
answer I get is, “’I don’t know.” “I have no idea,
that’s why I am coming to you.’’
Think
about this. Who do you want to be? If you were in a
bathroom stall and your friends didn’t know you were
there what would you love to over hear them say
about you? Would you like to be creative? Inspiring?
Compassionate? Passionate? What do you need to do to
start being that person? If you want to be a great
listener do you need to be quiet and let the other
person talk? Do you get so excited to say what’s on
your mind that you don’t listen to what the person
is saying?
If you
want to set goals for the New Year think about being
rather than doing. If someone ran up to you on the
street and said, ‘’Wow, you are so……” What would you
want them to say you were?
Coach’s Challenge:
Write
down 5-6 words that you would like to be. Don’t
worry if they feel too grand or big for you.
Challenge yourself and let yourself get excited
about the words you are choosing. Forget about what
you think you “should” be and feel what really gets
your blood going. Don’t worry if you don’t come up
to exactly the word that feels right immediately.
Keep trying on words until one feels right to you.
If
you would like to discuss who you would like to be
in 2007.
